Fitzroy – The Soul Survivors Show

After much food for thought, in July 2006 my partner Anna and I decided to launch The Soul Survivor Magazine as the info provider for the Soul Survivor.  It nearly didn’t happen after I was hospitalised with a broken ankle sustained in a major car accident one week before we went to print.

Our ethos was based on both our passion and experiences in loving our era of Funktastic music.  I was educated on the London Underground circuit championed by DJ’s like George Power, Paul Anderson and Cleveland Anderson. Anna frequented the Kent/Essex, South East arena championed by Dj’s Chris Hill, Froggy and the rest of the Funk Mafia. Even though we were both miles apart at the time, we digested the same food within those two separate slices of that Soul sandwich….. surfing the airwaves listening regularly to Greg Edwards, Robbie Vincent and Radio Invicta shows.

With Anna’s business and publication experience and my established musical journey as a radio/club DJ, we felt we could fill the void amongst the Black music journals already out there, as none was aimed specifically at those who embraced the Jazz Funk and Soul music bestowed upon them as teenagers during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

After deliberating over a few names we decided on a chosen one. Our confirmation in choosing that came a few days later when I found my DVD of James Brown’s history aptly titled Soul Survivor. In fact it was his passing on the 25th December 2006 that inspired our publication towards a new direction when we did a feature on his legacy, with contributions from Dj’s and music enthusiasts in Issue 5.

Since then we have established the formula of a comprehensive lifestyle magazine full of news, reviews, interviews and adverts for those still passionate about that nostalgic era we come from and what has derived from it since.  We have been blessed to interview a few of the many individuals who have contributed to the Soul world, be it a DJ, dancer, artist, musician, producer or songwriter.

Jocelyn Brown, Beggar & Co, Tashan, Dr Bob Jones, Omar, Leroy Burgess, Jean Carn, DJ Dez Parkes, DJ Chris Hill, Jeffery Daniel, DJ George Power, Melba Moore, Robert Khalis Bell (Kool & The Gang), Amp Fiddler, Frankie Beverly, John Legend, The Brand New Heavies, DJ Colin Curtis, Gwen Dickey (Rose Royce), Tommy Stewart, Larry Blackmon (Cameo) and Barbara Roy (Ecstasy Passion & Pain) have all expressed one definitive factor, and that is the dominance of Black music in their lives and on millions universally around the world.  Coming from different walks of life they eloquently convey their personal history and journey’s.  In some ways it’s been very rewarding and in many ways some have suffered unjustly for the love of their art, within a racially discriminating and corporate music arena.  These varied interviews give an unbiased and a more informed balanced account of what was happening outside our own backyards.

Anna and I have spent countless hours and money travelling and promoting, flying outside clubs, venues, concerts and weekenders around the country, attracting potential members and advertisers which help to fund running the magazine.  We have had some fantastic support from those who love our concept.

We have our own merchandise shirts, record bags and sports tops as well as a limited edition mixed CD exclusive to members only. We also send out a weekly “Something for the Weekend” email to our large database, detailing forthcoming events and info/links to those who advertise in the magazine.

Our current 3rd Anniversary Issue 18 has five interviews with Bluey (Incognito), Leon Ware, Hil St Soul, Lenny Williams and Eric Benet as well as our regular features established over the past three years….. plus adverts for four not to be missed concerts.

To become part of the Soul Survivor’s go to our website www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk or call 01732844246 and subscribe for £20 membership to receive the magazine hot of the press and obtain your free mixed CD and the varied discounts available.

MOTOWN’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS CONTINUE WITH THE LAUNCH OF BRAND NEW WEBSITE AND ONLINE STORE

Universal Music Catalogue is proud to announce the official launch of its new Motown50 website (www.motown50.co.uk) on Thursday 30th April 2009.

One of the key features of the website will be the launch of the brand new online store. In addition to the titles released throughout 2009 to celebrate Motown’s 50th anniversary, there will be a number of highly collectable releases that will be exclusively available to purchase through the Motown50 online store.

The first of these exclusive releases will be 5 highly collectable limited edition numbered 7” vinyl singles, featuring 10 of the best loved classic Motown cuts.

These rare one-of-a-kind 7” singles wonderfully represent the magical sound of Motown and mark the 50th anniversary of the greatest record label of all time. Available from 30th April, the singles come complete with a Motown Spider/45 single adaptor and a unique download code entitling fans to a free digital download of their purchase via the www.backtoblackvinyl.com website. Digital 2-track versions of each single will also be made available.

Following on from the success of last year’s Back to Black 60th Vinyl Anniversary campaign, Universal Music Catalogue will also reissue ten of the most groundbreaking Motown albums from classic artists including Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, The Four Tops and Stevie Wonder, amongst others. These will also be released on April 30th.

The albums will be released on heavyweight 180 gram re-mastered vinyl. In addition, each LP retains the exact replicas of their original stunning artwork and, like the 7” singles, each includes a download voucher.

Millions of fans worldwide who grew up with the sound and music of Motown will testify that Motown and vinyl go hand-in-hand, so these timely releases of such Motown gems will make these Limited Edition vinyl releases a must have for all collectors and fans.

Other features on the new Motown50.co.uk website include ‘The Motown Project’. This is an exciting interactive feature and it is hoped that this will establish the definitive history of Motown in the UK via a collection of editable pages on all-things Motown from singles, EPs and albums to artists and events. Daryl Easlea from Universal Music Catalogue said, “Fans of Motown here in the UK have a wealth of knowledge and passion about the label and its artists and ‘The Motown Project’ has been created to give everyone the chance to bring all this information together in one place.”

Universal Music has created several thousand pages covering UK releases, and are inviting fans to add any personally held knowledge they may have to these pages. This can include content varying from eye witness accounts to encounters with Motown artists, to photographs and associated images. Easlea goes on to say, “In time, these pages will become the definitive resource for Motown information, which will constantly evolve and improve, as more people get involved and become part of Motown history.“

Erik Rico – From LA To Brixton…

Erik Rico @ Mass – May 20th 2009.

Just droppin a quick note to say “ONE” to all that made it to see Erik on Wednesday. The odds were heavily against this gig actually happening after a fire at Plan B club (the original location) and a rail strike making travel to Brixton without a car pretty hectic on Wednesday. Never the less the promotion team stayed focused (big up BK and Audrey) and gave the attending headz a taste of magic from Erik. Had more than enough of the right headz in attendance to spread the word and that’s point..

The Ep is set up as a 10 track digital release including the beats/instrumentals but vinyl pressing is never out of the question.

This Mercury-nominated and Mobo-winning act need no introduction. 4HERO have been influencing and redefining the British dance music scene since the Eighties, ranging from early Rave and Drum and Bass through to the more recent Fusion Soul sound found on their critically-acclaimed album, Play With the Changes. It’s a pleasure to have these true legends topping the bill.

**** DON LETTS ****

An iconic figure in British music, DON LETTS’ influence has been felt on such diverse projects as Big Audio Dynamite co-founded with Mick Jones of The Clash, Trojan Records compilations, his own Grammy Award-winning documentary films, and a DJ career that stretches from his current BBC Radio show back to the early days of the Roxy Club. A classic autobiography released last year reveals the full extent of his legacy.
